Basic Decent Guide
One of our staff members has provided a unique and easy way to decent. Check out the tip.
Using the three to one (3-1) rule for my descents. Sample: at FL300 ( 30,000' ) to start descent for landing, 3 X 30 = 90 , so at 90 nm out I start.
If at 27,000' the Controller want me at any intersection down to 10,000';
27 - 10 = 17, now 3 X 17 = 51 nm plus I add some 5 extra nm to compensate for winds conditions then at 56nm out I start my descent.
Remember to adjust rate of descent accordingly, some times you are push by tail winds ( 1,800 fpm is usually default for B-737-400 ), and also remember to bring your speed back to 250 KTS under 10,000', on this phase is when you need to use your spoiler to adjust for speed.
